It’s clear September is here, with cool mornings and rainier weather. After the Virgen de la Rosa festivities in Ábalos, it’s time for preparations and awaiting the most anticipated moment of the year: the grape harvest.
What is grape harvest?
This involves harvesting grapes for wine production. The grapes are harvested until they reach optimal ripeness, meaning they have the right sugar level to later become a quality wine.
At Solana de Ramírez, we take special care of our grapes year-round, but it’s now that we pay the most attention to their development; it’s the key moment. Our field experts, Álvaro and Romualdo, are constantly collecting grape samples to evaluate their development and thus determine the optimal harvest time for each vineyard and prevent the spread of diseases that could spoil the grapes.
We continue to carry out manual harvesting, selecting the best bunches in the vineyard (and discarding any that are unhealthy), and a traditional “family” harvest. That’s why we invite you to come with family and friends to meet the family that makes up Bodegas Solana de Ramírez.
What are you going to see?
With our winemakers, you’ll see how the grapes enter the winery, how they are transferred to the tank, and how a winery operates during the winemaking process. This process can only be seen for a few weeks a year, since once the grapes are ready, they must be picked as quickly as possible.
Afterwards, you’ll be shown the barrel room, the wine cellar, and the barrel club, before moving on to the final experience: the tasting. We’ll then move on to our shop-tasting room, where you’ll enjoy three of our wines accompanied by a small, typical Rioja aperitif.
So, as I said, you can’t miss out on your “Vendimia Solana experience” during the grape harvest, which lasts approximately 20 days, depending on the weather.
