Gran Reserva Rioja Crafted in Our Ábalos Winery

In our family-run winery in Ábalos, at the heart of Rioja’s Sonsierra region, we craft our Solana de Ramírez Gran Reserva wines. A winery rooted in tradition, yet embracing modern technology to ensure the highest quality in every bottle. At the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, several generations later, we continue to create exquisite wines for refined palates.

Elegance, Complexity, and Aging Potential

Our Valsarte Gran Reserva wines are the result of a long, careful winemaking and aging process. Their aromatic complexity and structured tannins make them exceptional age-worthy wines.

Aging in Oak Barrels and Bottle

Aged for at least 24 months in French and American oak barrels followed by 48 months in bottle, these wines develop deep aromatic complexity, softened tannins, and a beautifully rounded palate.

Why Choose a Valsarte Gran Reserva?

Valsarte Gran Reserva is the perfect choice for wine lovers seeking a unique and sophisticated experience.

To craft a Rioja Gran Reserva, Javier selects grapes from our oldest vineyards — the “Centenales” — which are over 60 years old. From there, a meticulous selection process follows, typically using 70-80% Tempranillo and 20-30% Graciano). The entire process is defined by a deep respect for the fruit and a careful, time-honored approach to aging — hallmarks of our Valsarte wines.

Selected Harvest

Each grape cluster is carefully selected in the vineyard at harvest time, ensuring that only the highest-quality grapes—based on ripeness, size, color and overall appearance—are used in the winemaking process.

Hand-Picked Grapes

The grapes are meticulously selected in the vineyard and harvested by hand to guarantee their quality.

Destemming

The stems are removed from the grapes to prevent bitterness in the wine.

Gravity Transfer to Tanks

The grapes are transferred by gravity into stainless steel tanks, avoiding the use of pumps to preserve the integrity of the fruit.

Fermentation in Tanks for 15 Days at 25°C

The must ferments at a controlled temperature for 15 days, allowing the sugars to transform into alcohol and the aromas and flavors of the wine to develop.

Pressing

Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, the grape skins are pressed to extract the remaining wine.

Tanks Until Malolactic Fermentation

The wine is placed in stainless steel tanks to undergo malolactic fermentation—a natural process that softens the wine’s acidity and enhances its roundness on the palate.

Clarification and Filtration

Suspended particles are removed from the wine to ensure a clean, bright final product.

Aging in Oak Barrels for at Least 24 Months

The wine is aged for a minimum of 24 months in American and French oak barrels, adding complexity, elegance, and balance.

Bottling

The wine is bottled using high-quality natural cork stoppers.

Aging in Underground Cellars

After barrel aging, the wine rests in the bottle for at least 36 months allowing the flavors to integrate and the wine to reach its full expression.

Enjoy

Solana de Ramírez Gran Reserva wines pair beautifully with game dishes, braised red meats, aged cheeses, and foie gras.
